This week we were lucky enough to have a special guest come talk to our class about design thinking and innovation. We heard from Mr. Rick Mushing about what innovation has been like over the past few decades and what some big ideas are right around the corner. As a part of his visit, he was able to show us how a 3D printer can be used to create prototypes of big ideas. As we went through our lesson, he printed a small example for us to be able to see how the printing process works. Is was really fun for all of the students to see how a 3D printer works and to have something tangible at the end of the lesson.
The best part of the day was that we discovered that he was able to leave the 3D printer in our classroom for the next few weeks. I am really excited for our students to have the opportunity to develop some new skills in developing their designs and to be able to print things connected to their imaginations.
I will be talking to students throughout the week about how and why to create designs to be printed. In the meantime, here are a few sites and resources that can be helpful in getting started on thier own.
Tinkercad - This is probably the best resource to get started in working through how 3D printing software works.
